SELF-HELP COMMUNITIES

  • Durham, Durham County (pdf): We are currently building in 2 neighborhoods in Durham, the Walltown neighborhood and Southwest Central Durham. In 1996 as a part of the Duke-Durham Partnership, Duke University began working with Self-Help to build or renovate homes in Walltown. Since this time we have helped over 75 families achieve their dream of homeownership. Walltown is flanked by Duke University’s East campus, Northgate Mall, NC School of Math & Science, and other well-established neighborhoods. Southwest Central Durham (SWCD) is a cluster of neighborhoods nestled between Duke University’s Central Campus and Downtown Durham and is our newest site of development in the city. Self-Help, Durham Community Land Trustees, and Durham Habitat for Humanity have teamed up with the City of Durham and the Southwest Central Durham Quality of Life project to provide quality affordable homes.
  • Fuquay-Varina, Wake County (pdf): The Wake County Housing Department and the Consolidated School Redevelopment commission joined together with Self-Help to build seven affordable homes in a great historic neighborhood in the heart of Fuquay-Varina.  With the success of this first phase we plan to continue our affordable housing work in this neighborhood with the development of a 19-unit subdivision.  More information on these homes coming soon!
  • Charlotte, Mecklenburg County (pdf): In partnership with the Grier Heights Economic Foundation and Community Improvement Organization, construction has begun on two of eleven brand new homes. Grier Heights neighborhood represents one of the older historically African-American neighborhoods in Charlotte.  It is located near  Downtown Charlotte, schools, shopping, a major medical park and hospital.
  • Goldsboro, Wayne County: Located in Wayne County, Goldsboro is the proud home of the Seymour Johnson Airforce Base.  Downtown Goldsboro is located in one of only two neighborhoods in the state of North Carolina that is both a locally designated historic district and listed in the National Register of Historic Places.   In the heart of this historic district,  lies the South John  and William Street neighborhood,  within blocks of Goldsboro's downtown. Self-Help, the City of Goldsboro, and the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corporation have teamed up to complement the ongoing downtown revitalization efforts to provide affordable housing.  Self-Help will build three homes in 2007.   More information on these homes coming soon!
  • Greensboro, Guilford County: Self-Help is joining the efforts of the City of Greensboro, the Greensboro Housing Development Partnership, and the Ole Asheboro Planning Advisory Committee to build new homes for sale in the  City's Ole Asheboro neighborhood.  Another historically Afircan-American neighborhood and long neglected, the Old Asheboro neighborhood sits on the cusp of downtown.  Construction will begin in mid-2007 on four new, single-family homes.  More information on these homes coming soon!
