About Us

Self-Help's mission is to create and protect ownership and economic opportunity.

Founded in Durham in 1980, Self-Help is a nonprofit community development lender, real estate developer, and credit union that serves communities traditionally underserved by conventional markets. Through our lending, we have provided over $6.3 billion in financing to more than 81,000 families, small businesses and nonprofit organizations across the country. Our two credit unions, Self-Help Credit Union and Self-Help Federal Credit Union, together serve more than 90,000 credit union members through 35 branches in North Carolina, California and Chicago. Self-Help's research and policy arm, the Center for Responsible Lending, works to protect homeownership and family wealth by fighting predatory lending practices.
