Full Service Credit Unions
Q: How can someone join one of Self-Help’s full service credit unions?
A: One must either be within the designated field of membership of the full service credit union (live, work, or worship in the county of jurisdiction, etc.), or one must be, or become, a member of Self-Help's Center for Community Self-Help. The local branch will immediately process membership applications for eligible walk-in customers. Additionally, the appropriate membership application is available online at any of our full service credit union websites.
Q: Can a member of one of our credit unions open an account and/or take advantage of a product or service offered by another of our credit unions?
A: Yes. There is no need for the existing member to “join” again at the other credit union. However, transactions for accounts opened at one credit union must be conducted with the branch staff of that respective credit union. For example, Self-Help Credit Union mortgages cannot be paid through Cape Fear Credit Union, and car payments cannot be paid at traditional Self-Help Credit Union lending offices.
Q: “Retail” and/or “full service” credit union means what?
A: These are credit unions that in addition to providing a full range of deposit accounts, also provide consumer loan products like credit cards, debit cards, checking accounts, and auto loans.
Q: How are Self-Help Credit Union's "traditional" offices different from full service or retail credit unions?
A: Self-Help Credit Union’s "traditional" offices only provide mortgage and small business lending services. At Self-Help Credit Union's traditional offices you cannot get a car loan, cash a check, or apply for a credit or debit card.
Q: Which full service credit unions have merged with Self-Help?
A: Please click on the "Our Credit Unions" link of the Self-Help website to see the full list of retail credit unions of Self-Help Credit Union and Self-Help Federal Credit Union.
