Pauli Murray/Fitzgerald House Term Certificate
Information and application for the Pauli Murray/Fitzgerald House Term Certificate
Investing in the Pauli Murray/Fitzgerald House term certificate (CD) earns a return on your investment while helping save the Murray/Fitzgerald house, a monument to Durham’s significant African-American history and to Pauli Murray, one of our most accomplished daughters.
Pauli Murray (1910-1985) was an internationally known human rights activist, lawyer, poet, author, feminist and the first African-American woman to be ordained an Episcopal Priest. She grew up at 906 Carroll Street in Durham as a member of the prominent Fitzgerald family, early Durham educators, businesspeople and community leaders. Built circa 1890 by Murray’s grandparents, the house is a community asset and symbol of West End neighborhood tenacity.
The Murray/Fitzgerald certificate is federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration (the equivalent of the FDIC for credit unions) up to the $250,000 limit. Interest rates on these special certificates are 1.00% below the rate for a standard Self-Help certificate of equal term. E.g., if Self-Help’s current rate is 2.00% APR for a standard 36-month certificate, the Murray/Fitzgerald CD will provide a 1.00% APR to investors. The 1.00% difference will be dedicated entirely to preserving the house, with no administrative fee charged by Self-Help. (All investors who are not yet members of Self-Help Credit Union will need to pay a one-time fee of $20.) Minimum investment is $500, minimum term is 12 months.
If you are interested in investing in the Murray/Fitzgerald CD, you can download a printable application and other relevant forms, email Self-Help's Member Service Team or call 800.966.7353.
Saving the Pauli Murray/Robert Fitzgerald House is a collaborative effort between the Pauli Murray Project, the Southwest Central Durham Quality of Life Project and Preservation Durham, as well as Self-Help. If you would like to make a tax deductible gift to the project, please contact Preservation Durham at info@PreservationDurham.org or 919.682.3036.
