Self-Help Federal Credit Union
A federally chartered, federally insured credit union offering socially responsible deposit accounts.

Self-Help Federal Credit Union
Self-Help Federal Credit Union (SHFCU) is a federally insured, member-owned affiliate of Self-Help. Founded in 2008, SHFCU expands Self-Help’s mission by increasing access to responsible and affordable financial services in under-served communities, initially in California. With your deposit in SHFCU, you support our mission to help hardworking individuals, families and communities grow stronger and you collect dividends (interest earnings).
SHFCU offers the following deposit accounts:
- Money Market
- Term certificates (CDs) (Including specialty CDs: Green, Women & Children, and Economic Development)
SHFCU’s first strategy is mergers with other community credit unions. These mergers allow Self-Help to leverage its scale and experience to help preserve, strengthen and/or expand other California credit unions that might be at risk, or simply unable to expand to meet the compelling needs in the communities they serve.
California-based credit unions are now divisions of SHFCU. Click on the images below for information for locations, and information about products and services they offer:
Self-Help is also developing a new model to bring more unbanked individuals into the financial mainstream. Our “micro-branch” model is based on small branches designed to transition low-income customers currently using higher cost, transaction-based financial services to a responsible, main-stream depository relationship. The first micro-branch opened for business in January of 2010. Combining micro-branches with a network of community-based credit union branches provides a sustainable way to create and protect ownership and economic opportunity for a wide range of individuals and communities who are outside the economic mainstream.
Your savings at SHFCU are federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration (the equivalent of the FDIC for credit unions) up to the $250,000 limit.
