World's Edge

World’s Edge is a 1,568-acre tract of scenic woodland in Western North Carolina. The land’s deep caves, soaring cliffs and sparkling waterfalls are a diverse ecological treasure The area is also home to a variety of rare flowers, endangered animal species and an array of birds including the peregrine falcon.

When this rugged landscape came under threat of development, Self-Help partnered with the Open Space Institute, private donors, the Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy and the Nature Conservancy to preserve its natural beauty and integrity for future generations by converting the area into a new state park.  Combined with the resources of the aforementioned partners, our $3 million bridge loan made this conversion possible, highlighting the potential for collaboration between private and public entities, individuals, and organizations in response to complex community problems.

No longer vulnerable to commercial development, this stunning landscape will continue to be a haven for a wide range of flora and fauna as well as the climbers, hikers, and bird-watchers who come to appreciate its natural beauty.
