Wilmington, CA — Self-Help Federal Credit Union is pleased to announce that Family Federal Credit Union (FFCU) in Wilmington, CA joined the Self-Help Federal Credit Union network effective September 1.

FFCU was founded in 1983 by Father Luis Valbuena to help meet the financial needs of the community. It serves mostly lower-income Latino families through its Wilmington branch. The credit union has 1,500 members and assets of about $8 million. Membership approved the merger at a special member meeting August 28.

“Merging with Self-Help ensures our members expanded services such as an ATM at the branch, longer hours, and new products like IRAs and mortgages,” says FFCU President Lucia Moreno-Linares, who will remain as Branch Manager. “It also makes us part of Self-Help’s growing network of branches in California, Chicago and Florida. Most importantly, it continues our legacy of mission-driven service to the community.”

Steve Zuckerman, President of Self-Help Federal stated, “We are thrilled to welcome Family Federal members and staff to the Self-Help family. We look forward to bringing more economic opportunities to Wilmington and surrounding areas while carrying on the Family Federal tradition of service.” Self-Help Federal Credit Union, chartered in 2008, has $665 million in assets and serves over 80,000 people with 18 branches in California, three in greater Chicago and two Florida. It is part of the Self-Help family of nonprofit organizations that includes North Carolina’s Self-Help Credit Union, a national loan fund and the Center for Responsible Lending, a policy and advocacy organization addressing abusive lending practices. Since its 1980 founding, Self-Help has provided over $7 billion in financing to 120,000 families, individuals and businesses underserved by traditional financial institutions.
