About Our Deposit Accounts
When you open a deposit account in Self-Help, you get more than a competitive rate of return and a safe place to invest your money. Your savings also helps others begin the process of building wealth.
We use your deposit to provide responsible and affordable financial services, mortgages, and small business loans to people of color, women, rural residents, and low-wealth families – those most often left out of the economic mainstream. With each loan payment, our borrowers build wealth and self-sufficiency for themselves and their families. And in turn our communities become better places to live.
You can support our mission through two federally insured credit unions - the North Carolina chartered Self-Help Credit Union (SHCU) and the federally chartered Self-Help Federal Credit Union.
Just like deposits in banks, our credit union deposits are federally insured up to $250,000 (per credit union) by NCUA, the credit union equivalent to the FDIC.
We offer Checking Accounts, Money Market, Savings, Term Certificates, and IRA accounts. Our interest rates are competitive, change daily, and are always posted on our web site.
Thousands of socially responsible investors from all over the country have deposit accounts with us. We work hard to provide the best possible service in our Durham, NC branch and by telephone, mail, e-mail and over the Internet.
We hope you’ll find answers to most of your questions on this web site. (Take a look at our Membership FAQ's and Deposit FAQ's. And be sure to read our Annual Reports, Impact Sheets, and other brochures.) But if you have additional questions, please contact us via email, or call 1-800-966-SELF (9 am-5 pm ET, M-F). We appreciate your interest, and hope you’ll open an account soon.

Effective immediately, the National Credit Union Administration (the equivalent of the FDIC for credit unions) has raised the insurance limit on credit union savings. Your savings at Self-Help Credit Union and Self-Help Federal Credit Union are insured by NCUA to at least the new $250,000 limit.
