National Baptist Convention Embarks on National Campaign

Spearheads Multi-year, Multi-million Dollar Effort to Launch NBC Credit Union

Jan 24, 2019

[Jackson, MS] January 14, 2019 — The National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. (NBC), will officially launch a national deposit-raising campaign during its mid-winter Board Meeting on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, at 10:45 a.m. at the Jackson Convention Complex in Jackson, Mississippi.

The initiative seeks to raise $50 million over the next three to five years to open a NBC-founded credit union.

The multi-year, multi-million dollar funding campaign calls on NBC members and supporters to make individual federally-insured deposits with Self-Help, a group founded to expand economic opportunities, provide technical support, financial services and advocacy for underserved communities.  Once the Convention is granted regulatory approval, depositors may begin to transfer funds to the newly chartered NBC credit union.

The partnership builds on an established relationship between NBC and the Center for Responsible Lending, the consumer advocacy arm of the Self-Help family of organizations.

“Credit unions are closely aligned with our mission and work,” states Dr. Jerry Young, president of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. “The National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. has always recognized the importance of working together and pooling our resources to build strong communities. Creating this credit union is a natural extension of our historic mission of increasing both the spiritual and financial well-being of our member churches and their parishioners nationwide.”
