Easing the Burden of Medical Care: Ronald McDonald House

By Staff
October 5, 2026

Self-Help Ventures Fund is providing $14 million in New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC) toward the construction of a new seven-story 54,000 sq ft facility for the Ronald McDonald House of South Florida.

The Ronald McDonald House of South Florida eases the strain of families whose children are receiving extensive medical care at nearby hospitals by providing lodging and other necessities at no cost.

What is the Ronald McDonald House?

When a child requires extensive medical care, medical bills are just one of the many things that can become financially challenging for a family to take on.

Families who don't live near a major medical facility have to cover the costs of housing for weeks at a time, as well as any additional living costs while potentially losing wages if they need to be away from their jobs to provide support and care to their child.

Ronald McDonald House of South Florida works to make the whole process a little easier by providing housing, meals, transportation, laundry and support services to families whose children are receiving medical care for an extended period of time at Jackson Memorial Hospital or Holtz Children's Hospital in Miami. Many of the families who are served at these hospitals are uninsured or underinsured, compounding their financial pressures and making access to this type of support extremely meaningful.

Families at the Ronald McDonald House stay an average of 40 days and save families an average of $5,000 per month. In 2025, it served 350 families, and with the construction of this new facility, its capacity will nearly double.

What are New Market Tax Credits?

According to the CDFI Fund, New Market Tax Credits are a way to promote investment of private capital into low-income communities. Community Development Entities (CDEs) are granted a certain amount of NMTC to use and can make investments into various projects in exchange for a tax credit against their federal income tax, which benefits all parties involved. Over 80% of NMTC investments have been made in economically distressed communities, encouraging economic growth in these areas.

Self-Help Ventures Fund is a certified CDE with $558 million in total NMTC allocations to date, including $75 million awarded in 2026. We are honored to support projects like Ronald McDonald House that create stronger, healthier communities who have typically been underserved.
