Community Development Lending

Self-Help partnered with community-minded developers in Pomona, California to restore the former Pomona YMCA.

Our Community Development lending programs

Through our nonprofit loan fund, Self-Help Ventures Fund, we provide capital for high-impact projects that help communities thrive.

Commercial Lending

Investing in communities

We lend to community institutions like nonprofits, community health care providers, public charter schools and more. Through Self-Help Ventures Fund, we lend to institutions that help communities thrive, including:

  • Affordable housing developments
  • Public charter schools
  • Childcare centers
  • Clean energy providers
  • Nonprofits
  • Community health care providers
  • Faith-based organizations

Secondary Market Program

Multiplying our impact

We purchase loans from other lenders, extending our impact to thousands of families nationwide.

Through our secondary market program, we purchase home and consumer loans from other community-focused lenders. These purchases give the lenders liquidity that they can use to make more loans. By partnering with other financial institutions, in this way, we're able to multiply our impact, helping to bring affordable loans to families across the country.

New Markets Tax Credit Investments (NMTC)

Investing in education and healthcare

Our NMTC allocations fuel high-impact community development projects that benefit underserved areas. Self-Help's New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) program leverages tax credits to bring needed investment into underserved areas.

The program is made possible by allocations of tax credits from the US Department of Treasury. Since the program began in 2000, Self-Help Ventures Fund has received more than $558 million in allocations.

Our NMTC projects focus on public education and community health care.

Affordable Housing Finance

Expanding what's possible

We make loans directly to developers of high-quality affordable housing. We also operate place-based affordable housing loan funds that focus on supporting historically disadvantaged communities within our geographical footprint.

  • We're working with partners to create innovative solutions to the affordable housing crisis.
  • We leverage tax credits to make affordable housing development projects more financially feasible.
  • We create affordable housing loan funds in targeted cities.
Expanding Homeownership
Inspire 100 — part of our secondary market program — makes affordable, 100% LTV mortgages available to families across the nation.

Since the program launched in 2024, it has helped more than 220 borrowers to become first-time homeowners.

Supporting families during health challenges
Self-Help provided $14 million in NMTC allocations to help make this $35 million project possible.

Self-Help and other lenders came together to finance a new Ronald McDonald House in Miami, FL. The facility provides free, comfortable accommodations for out-of-town families whose children are going through intensive medical treatment.

Helping high-quality public charter schools grow
In 2025, Self-Help provided $10 million in New Markets Tax Credits, along with $16.4 million in financing to support the buildout of a new facility for VAES.

Valor Academy Elementary School (VAES) is a free public charter school in North Hills, California. VAES sets its students on a path for success with a thoughtful approach that includes strong academics, holistic and proactive support, and a deep connection to the local community.

The larger building gave VAES space to enroll nearly 100 additional students.
