25+ years of investing in a greener future for all
Clean energy and energy affordability are deeply connected to Self-Help’s mission of creating and protecting economic opportunity for all. For over 25 years, Self-Help has financed more than $500 million to support green projects that generate cost savings and create a cleaner environment.
Key lending and investment areas
Through our credit unions, we offer green loans to finance green home improvement, residential solar, and electric vehicles.
As part of our community development lending, we offer senior debt for commercial projects in renewable energy, clean transportation, and energy efficiency. Loan sizes range from $1 million – 20 million, and we have a strong preference for scalable projects that benefit low-income communities.
We purchase green consumer loans from lending partners to provide liquidity and scale impact. We also partner with nonprofits and clean energy programs to help amplify our collective reach.
Self-Help launched Climate Capital in 2024 to build on our long-time commitment to sustainability. For more information on our role with Climate United and the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, click here.

Self-Help has an ambitious goal to reach carbon neutrality (Scope 1 & 2 emissions) in our operations by 2030. To get there, we:
- Analyze our utility data and benchmark our energy use
- Make energy efficiency improvements in our buildings
- Invest in solar
- Follow green building guidelines like SystemVision and Energy Star in our real estate development projects
