Why Become a Member?

Products that support your goals. A mission that supports your values.

Self-Help is a credit union… but that’s not all. We’re also a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), a research and policy organization, and a champion for economic justice. Across everything we do, we’re working towards a singular vision: protecting ownership and economic opportunity for all.

The credit union difference

When you join a credit union, you become part of something larger: a movement that prioritizes people, not profits. Like other nonprofit cooperatives, credit unions are democratically run, member-owned, and focused on benefiting all members. At Self-Help, we keep our members’ best interests in mind. And we've been doing it for over 40 years.

We believe in our members
We journey alongside our members, whether the path to achieving their financial goals is short and simple or long and winding.

When others say, “No,” we say, “Let’s work together to get you to yes,” because we know that when more people succeed — whether by building credit, starting businesses, or buying homes — it is a win for us all.

We invest in our communities
As a commercial lender and community developer, we create deep relationships in the neighborhoods and cities across our footprint.

Our partners and borrowers bring strong skills and local knowledge; we bring technical expertise and the financial investment that has often been denied to our communities. Together, we build infrastructure that helps everyone thrive: affordable housing, multi-use commercial redevelopmentsclean energy projects and more.

We work to create systemic change
We understand the systemic barriers that undermine financial success for too many people.

We advocate every day alongside community leaders and national allies to create more equitable systems, stop predatory lending and stand up for responsible financial practices. We’re working for opportunity for all — within our communities and beyond.
