The Sugar Hill Kakery in Laurinburg, NC

Customers wait in line at The Sugar Hill Kakery on the occasion of their grand opening.

Supporting local NC businesses

When Jessica Reed-Hill began baking cakes for neighbors and friends in her hometown of Laurinburg, NC, she had no idea her cakes and other baked goods would become so popular, she’d eventually have to choose between her job as a teacher’s assistant for the local public schools and her baking. The decision became easier for Jessica, who specializes in wedding cakes, and “look-alike” cakes, when she received an order for delivery to a wedding venue in Virginia.

By then she knew her business was growing, and that she needed a brick-and-mortar location to support that growth. With careful planning, and a loan from Self-Help to finance equipment and renovations, Jessica signed a lease on a commercial space in downtown Laurinburg.

To say that Ms. Reed-Hill’s cakes, cookies and other treats are popular is an understatement. The loan closed on Valentine’s Day of 2023. On the day of the closing, Ms. Reed-Hill delivered 700 chocolate covered strawberries and hundreds of Valentine’s Day treat boxes to customers as far as South Carolina.

Nowadays, The Sugar Hill Kakery is not just a place to order a cake for a celebration, but also a café for enjoying Jessica’s signature baked goods. You just have to get past the line going out the door.
