Our colleagues in our Greenville, South Carolina, branches are humbled to have partnered with Front Porch Housing for the last three-plus years. The relationship demonstrates how aligned organizations can multiply their impact through collaboration.
Front Porch Housing works with families and individuals in crisis to provide the tools they need to stabilize and thrive. Their supportive housing campus includes Inspire Coffee House where "you belong" is emblazoned on the wall. The property features a playground, library and childcare for residents.
Through their three-year program, Front Porch offers comprehensive services including parenting guidance, career support, life skills training and physical wellness resources. Their mission centers on providing safe, dignified housing while guiding people "from crisis to connection." To date, they have served over 400 residents.
One of those valuable connections is with Self-Help Credit Union. Residents can participate in a savings match program that complements the free financial coaching offered at all our branches. So far, over 101 participants have improved their financial futures through this partnership.
The collaboration addresses a critical barrier many face: institutional mistrust. When new members from Front Porch visit a branch, they know they can say, "I'm from Front Porch" and find a welcoming environment with supportive member service representatives ready to assist them. The Front Porch program includes 12 weeks of financial education where residents can work through past difficulties and overcome habits that no longer serve them.
"Front Porch is a very meaningful partner for us," said Michael Gates, who teaches a section of the financial education curriculum. Michael, who is regional manager at Self-Help Credit Union, notes that connecting with community organizations in ways that we can be useful is central to Self-Help’s mission.
Front Porch Housing’s LeeAnne Cavin, concurs; “This collaboration embodies the shared mission of both organizations to provide equitable opportunities and support to underserved communities. Working together addresses core needs and fosters long-term financial stability, restored credit, increased personal savings and community development.”
