Eligibility—Easy Ways to Join Us

There are several ways to become a member of Self-Help Credit Union:

  1. Join if you live, work, worship or attend school in any of the eligible areas or entities in North Carolina, South Carolina or Florida listed below and open an account with a minimum $5 balance.
  2. Join our nonprofit, the Center for Community Self-Help, for a one-time $5 fee.

You are also eligible for Self-Help Credit Union membership (1) if you are an immediate family member of an existing member, or (2) through a qualifying workplace affiliation.

We also have a federally chartered sister credit union, Self-Help Federal Credit Union, serving California, Greater Chicago and Wisconsin.

Eligible Florida areas/entities

Employees of the following Jacksonville, Florida entities are eligible to join Self-Help Credit Union with a minimum $5 balance:

  • City of Jacksonville
  • Jacksonville Electric Authority
  • Jacksonville Port Authority
  • Jacksonville Housing Authority
  • Jacksonville Transportation Authority
  • Duval County School Board

You are eligible if you live or work in the geographic zip codes listed below (with a minimum $5 balance).  You may also be eligible if you live or work within the Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA) service area with a minimum $5 balance. Within JEA servicing area with water and/or electric in your name, qualify for membership.

In the Apopka/Pierson areas of Florida, you are eligible if you meet one of the following conditions:

  • Regular members and associates (associate is limited specifically to employees and officials of Home In Partnership, Inc., Office of Farmworkers Ministry, and/or Justice and Peace Office, Inc.) of the West Orange Farmworkers Health Association, Inc., in Orange and Lake Counties, Florida, who qualify for membership in accordance with its constitution and bylaws as of the date of this charter; employees of the above association;
  • Employees of Dewkist Plants, Inc., who work in Apopka, Florida;
  • Voting members of the Farmworker Association of Central Florida, Inc., in Apopka, Florida;
  • Employees of Fern Growers Wholesale Supply, Inc., who work in Pierson, Florida; 
  • Employees of Dave’s Nursery who work in Apopka, Florida
  • Spouses of persons who died while members of this credit union; employees of this credit union; persons retired as pensioners or annuitants from the above employment; members of the immediate family or household; organizations of such persons and corporate or other legal entities in this charter.

Eligible South Carolina areas/entities

For Greenville, our field of membership is anyone who lives, works, worships, attends school or volunteers in Greenville County, SC and clients of CommunityWorks Carolina.
