In the scenic mountains of Western North Carolina, Transylvania County faces a hidden challenge: food insecurity affects many residents. The Hunger Coalition of Transylvania County, already an important resource for the county, proved especially valuable after Helene. Founded on a mission to ensure no resident goes hungry, the organization serves as both a direct service provider, and a collaborative network, connecting local organizations, churches, and volunteers to collectively strengthen local hunger relief efforts. Their work includes:

Volunteers for The Hunger Coalition keep things orderly in their warehouse.
Self-Help first connected with The Hunger Coalition about a decade ago when one of our staff members noticed the organization needed permanent space for operations and food storage. We offered them space in an adjacent building at our administrative office building in Penrose, N.C. Having a larger space to do their work allowed the organization to grow into what it is today: a sophisticated, innovative and efficient program for getting nutritious food to those who need it.
It’s gratifying to share space with such an aligned organization.
