Spotlight: The Hunger Coalition of Transylvania County

In the scenic mountains of Western North Carolina, Transylvania County faces a hidden challenge: food insecurity affects many residents. The Hunger Coalition of Transylvania County, already an important resource for the county, proved especially valuable after Helene. Founded on a mission to ensure no resident goes hungry, the organization serves as both a direct service provider, and a collaborative network, connecting local organizations, churches, and volunteers to collectively strengthen local hunger relief efforts. Their work includes:

  • Coordinating with local food pantries to maximize reach

  • Connecting with farmers and local businesses to source fresh, nutritious food

  • Organizing volunteers from across the county to contribute their time and energy

  • Providing classes on healthy eating and food preparation

  • Advocating for policy change to address systemic causes of food insecurity

Self-Help first connected with The Hunger Coalition about a decade ago when one of our staff members noticed the organization needed permanent space for operations and food storage. We offered them space in an adjacent building at our branch in Penrose, N.C. Having a larger space to do their work allowed the organization to grow into what it is today: a sophisticated, innovative and efficient program for getting nutritious food to those who need it.

It’s gratifying to share space with such an aligned organization.

A decade ago, Self-Help provided space at one of our branches to The Hunger Coalition of Transylvania County, which allowed the organization to expand into a comprehensive program that proved critical during Hurricane Helene's aftermath. Self-Help seeks opportunities to connect meaningfully with locally minded organizations like The Hunger Coalition and we are grateful to them for all their contributions to Transylvania County.
