Self-Help Credit Union and Alliance Credit Union of Florida Merge June 1

Jun 2, 2025

[Durham, NC| June 1, 2025] — Alliance Credit Union of Florida is pleased to announce that it is merging with Self-Help Credit Union, effective June 1.

In November 2024, the Florida Office of Financial Regulation (OFR) placed the Gainesville-based credit union in conservatorship. OFR appointed the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) as the conservator. NCUA selected Self-Help Credit Union as Alliance’s merger partner.

Alliance Credit Union of Florida was founded in 1944 to serve employees of the City of Gainesville and their families, that first operated out of the basement of City Hall. Today the credit union serves anyone living or working in Alachua, Bradford, Gilchrist, Levy, or Union County, and other employee groups as well as their family members.

Alliance serves more than 5,300 members out of two branches in Gainesville and holds approximately $59 million in total assets.

Alliance’s operations will continue without disruption, with member services available online and at its Gainesville branches. The downtown office (412 East University Avenue) and Millhopper office (4280 N.W. 16th Blvd.) maintain regular business hours.

“We are excited to welcome the 5,000+ members of Alliance to Self-Help,” said Randy Chambers, President of Self-Help Credit Union. “We have a long history of serving municipal employees and community residents, including in nearby Jacksonville. We are committed to continuing Alliance’s 81-year history of service, by giving back to members with low fees and strong rates on deposits and loans.”

Self-Help Credit Union has pledged to eliminate all overdraft and NSF (bounced check) fees at Alliance on day one.

Self-Help Credit Union was chartered in 1983 to build a network of branches that partner with working families and communities often underserved by the financial marketplace. With over $1.86 billion in assets and serving more than 98,000 members in 38 branches – eight in Florida, one in Georgia, 24 in North Carolina, four in South Carolina, and one in Virginia - Self-Help Credit Union is one of the fastest-growing community development financial institutions in the country. It is part of the National Center for Community Self-Help, a family of nonprofit organizations with a collective mission to create and protect ownership and economic opportunity for all. For over 40 years, Self-Help and its affiliates have provided more than $11 billion in financing to help more than 168,000 borrowers buy homes, start and grow businesses, and strengthen community resources.
