An important announcement for our South Carolina members:

We're excited to share some good news!

The votes are in! As of September 1, 2025, all accounts and loans associated with South Carolina branches of Self-Help Credit Union (SHCU) have been transferred to our sister institution, Self-Help Federal Credit Union (Self-Help Federal). In August, members voted to enable this transfer, which is called a “spin-off” in credit union lingo, and the measure has now gone into effect.

The first thing to know about this transfer is that it will not impact how you bank with Self-Help. Your online banking login information will not change, and you will still have access to your normal branch for in-person banking. Your accounts, loans and services will continue without interruption. Our staff, leadership and commitment to you remain unchanged. You will continue to receive the same service, rates and products from the same people in our branches. In fact, this may feel like a simple name change to most members.

Background

In reviewing our strategic goals, our board of directors felt that our South Carolina members would be better served by a federal credit union, which allows Self-Help to expand and open branches in more cities across the state. After the board voted unanimously on the matter, our members then approved it in a vote that took place on August 26, 2025. The change has now gone into effect, as of September 1, 2025.

Self-Help Credit Union and Self-Help Federal Credit Union both have branches across the country. Both are guided by one mission: creating and protecting ownership and economic opportunity for all.

As part of this exciting transfer to Self-Help Federal, look for a new branch opening this fall in Summerville, right outside of Charleston.

A few things to know

What will stay the same:

  • You will continue to log in to online and mobile banking the same way you do now.
  • Your routing number (#253184841) and account number will stay the same.
  • You will continue to use your current checks and your current credit and debit card numbers.
  • Any recurring ACH transactions will continue uninterrupted.
  • The interest rates on your deposits and loans will remain the same.
  • You will still receive the same service, rates and products from the same people in our branches and call center.

What will change:

  • Exterior signage on our branch buildings will change to include “Federal” in our name.
  • In the coming months, you will receive new credit and debit cards bearing the slightly different Self-Help Federal Credit Union logo. However, your card numbers will not change.
